PlayStation Productions

According to Hollywood Reporter’s Patrick Shanely, Sony has expanded to include a new production studio: PlayStation Productions.

The article said that PlayStation Productions will have more than 100 video game titles to create movies and television shows. However, is this a successful concept? As much as people love video games (personally, I lost way too many hours on the latest God of War game… no complaints!), they do not appear to do as well in the box office. From an outsider’s perspective, the good movies (Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Resident Evil) are amazing, while everything else falls short… it can be completely hit or miss. Nothing feels worse when you have been looking forward to a movie for months and it was a total flop! Raise your hand if you’re worried about Sonic the Hedgehog (I am!).

The good news is that it appears this concern, for quality material, is being taken into consideration by PlayStation Productions. In the article by Patrick Shanely, PlayStation Productions will be the in full control of the media they put out, going on to say: “Instead of licensing our IP out to studios, we felt the better approach was for us to develop and produce for ourselves… One, because we’re more familiar, but also because we know what the PlayStation community loves.”

I think this is a good move on their part. They have an arsenal of beloved characters and stories that can pack a punch as well as be somewhat of a palate cleanser from movie remakes. What do we think – is this the new Marvel Studios? Also, are we ever getting an Uncharted movie?!
