What is going on with the YouTube beauty community?? I used to love watching beauty videos. It was my escape from the real world; especially after a long day of work, family issues, and school. What started off as me wanting to learn more about make up and watch it be used in ways I could never be creative enough to even imagine, turned into a real love affair. I couldn’t get enough, I still can’t, it’s fun to keep up to date on new products and try different skin care lines. Flash forward to a few years later, we are in the midst of another huge scandal! This time it involves Tati Westbrook and James Charles.
This situation has taken in a life of its own, I believe at the time of this post Tati has almost doubled her viewer count. Unfortunately, due to this I think the power behind her message is getting overlooked. The reasoning behind this drama, as well as how fast it has escalated, can easily be found in about a hundred different YouTube videos (and seems to be constantly updated with new “facts”), but what I feel like is being glazed over is something Tati mentioned in her video. It is one thing deal in shady business (people keep bringing up the vitamins) with your friends, but the issue is that there is a manipulation aspect as well as disrespect towards other’s sexuality. James Charles is a role model as she states…this random young person, who rose to fame quite instantly, is a role model. Not too long ago we only had tv stars, movie stars, and athletes for young people (not to mention other professions) to look up to; however, now the marketplace for an entertainment personality is flooded. I believe it is vital for kids and young adults to understand the importance behind researching, not only into the food and products we consume daily, but the individuals we are investing our time as well as our hard earned money. Just because a person is “famous” does not make them a good person.
I am not going to link his video because I do believe the information Tati shared is true, and I do not want to fuel any more views for his channel; however, again that is just my opinion (unless it’s facts it’s all opinion, question everything!), to have the full story it might be best to listen to both sides.
Thanks for listening to my rant 🙂
I hear you. The drama is really frustrating. Honestly, I think sometimes, some of these people get too much money, have too much of an audience and they lose the ability to focus and care about their influence because the money is so Much more important to them.
It’s sad, but that’s just my opinion. Too many beauty videos are all about the dollars. People seem to become less and less genuine the larger their audience gets.
Do I think Tati has a right to call him out? Sure do. Is that a part of the beauty community I care to follow along with? Nope. It sucks.
Sorry for ranting via comment. Just saw your post and it got me thinking

I completely agree with you, money has totally changed the dynamics/quality makeup tutorials and reviews, which is sad. A big difference I’ve noticed, once the audience starts growing and ads start playing in videos, is the diversity of the products that get used become limited. There are constantly new brands and products but I feel like all I hear about is Morphe, Jouer, Tarte, Colourpop (which I’m not mad at especially excited for their new watermelon series they are rolling out!).
It’s nice to hear that we’re not alone in thinking this is crazy that this is even an issue, makeup needs to be fun!
Do you have any recommendations of YouTube beauty creators to follow?

RIGHT? It’s so sad. Oh, and I get especially ragey when things are clearly being sponsored and they’re not telling people that it’s a sponsored comment. That pisses me off so badly!
Another thing that pisses me off is when someone doesn’t put up a video unless it’s sponsored. Like… if every video is sponsored. If you don’t even come on youtube unless you’re making a brand deal… you’re doing it for the wrong reasons.
Someone I still find very genuine, even though she’s got a large subscriber count, is ‘Leighann Says’. Recently Leigh Ann has branched out into non-beauty type videos as well, but her beauty related videos are still very genuine and she seems as though she’s not just doing it for the big bucks. That being said, some others might have different opinions of her.
Another youtube beauty guru that I like is RachhLoves. I find her to be very genuine as well. Even though she has a large audience, she doesn’t seem to do a ton of sponsored posts. Which I kind of like… because it means she’s doing her videos because she wants to, not because a brand is paying her to.
I’ve you’ve heard of both of them already, I guess I don’t have too many good suggestions for you! haha.
I’ve kind of branched out into other genres. Now that I see how heavily sponsored the beauty industry is on youtube, I’ve branched out into less popular categories. If that makes sense.
I’m rambling again. Sorry! haha

I love this, I haven’t heard of either of these YouTubers! I’ll check them out! I do like when it’s not solely about make up, mixes up the content a bit! Thank you, it’s nice to get a fresh take! All this drama is kind of a good thing, it’s giving others a shot at viewers because people are getting fed up with the product pushing!
