We went and saw Avengers: Endgame last night and it was pretty f*cking awesome. We wanted to share some quick thoughts here:
KHELI
I cried quite a few times and coming out of the theater I had more than a few questions. In the dark of the theater there are moments where I gasped, I cheered and I whispered iconic lines right before I knew they were going to say them onscreen. It was an engaging 3 hours (yes, I did have to sneak out for a quick bathroom break) and I am already excited to go back and see it again. I can’t wait for a breakdown of all the “easter eggs” and call backs present that create a through line to all 21 movies that came before it.
There were a few sections that I thought could have been cut – I’m still not a fan of Chris Pratt’s Starlord – and there are a ton of time travel related questions I have, but overall I loved the movie. I would give it an “A” out of 5.
Some of my favorite moments were:
- When Cap picks up Mjolnir
- That was INSANE! The whole theater cheered
- Fat Thor
- Never would have expected that Thor would get fat, or that he would stay that way most of the movie and they would play it for laughs!
- Pepper in her Iron Man suit!
- She’s really gotten used to how to wear/use it
- Peter’s “Instant Death” setting on his spidey suit
- Nice call back to Homecoming
- Old Man Cap
- though I don’t understand the time travel around it, so glad Cap got his happy ending after all that time
- The ultimate Avengers lineup shot
- I was waiting after the Hulk’s snap for when all the “dusted” heroes would show up and kick Thanos’ ass. The movie didn’t disappoint
MISSY
I might be dead inside. I didn’t cry.
Despite my personal issues, this movie was a rollercoaster of feels. I appreciated that the film gave all of our beloved characters a moment to shine, as we’ll as give us closure; although, there were some I felt deserved more than were given. Why did only Tony get the funeral, and there wasn’t more for Black Widow? She sacrificed herself as well for the greater good. Kheli also made a good point the other day that Bucky didn’t get as much recognition as he deserves with Captain America. Also, I wish we saw a bit more of the newer members like Spider-Man and Black Panther (yes I understand they were snapped away and this is more of a farewell to the original crew), there were parts of the film which I felt were a bit long and dragged on which could have been cut to add more storyline. In a way, parts of Endgame reminded me of the wolverine movie Logan, where this is very much more of a drama rather than a superhero movie. Importance was placed more on the dynamics of the issue rather than throwing a complicated story. Which I’m not mad about, this is a fitting vibe for our characters at this point in their lives.
Overall, the storyline to include all the characters, even quick cameos, was done well and makes the hefty time of 3 hours an understandable amount of time. However, no length of time will help explain their version of time travel..even with Tilda Swinton’s fancy visual representation of how the crystals affect time as we know it. I need comparisons, my pea brain does not understand time travel. So to throw out the classic concepts via Back to the Future, and timey wimey understanding of time made for this complicated. I need to not delve deep into this, but just take it at face value; if the Hulk is saying this is how time travel works, then this is how time travel works.
Final thoughts- Hawkeye looks good with a full sleeve.
